Education and Culture

Cordoba is well-known nationally and internationally for its state and private universities that provide a wide variety of fields for academic and professional study and for the presence of scientific-technological centers of study. For this reason, it has been known as “La Docta” (the Learned One) for the last couple of centuries.

There are ten universities located throughout the province. The most renowned, the Universidad Nacional de Cordoba, was founded by the Jesuits in 1613. It is the oldest in the country and the second oldest in the Americas. Due to its prestige, excellence and trajectory, this university hosts students from all of the other Argentine provinces as well as neighboring countries. In accordance with this, more than 115 thousand students are registered there and around 15 thousand more apply each year.

It is important to point out that more than 10% of the total population of the province is composed of university students. In the city of Cordoba alone, there are more than 140 thousand students enrolled in university or tertiary education courses. Within the province, this total is estimated at 170 thousand students.

To add to the aforementioned, the city is composed of an architectural nucleus that was denominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In various points of the province are found a group of structures with significant socio-cultural value, including the Catedral, the town hall, the Jesuit Block and Crypt, and the road to Jesuit Estancias, among others.
